Welsh Government launches Taxi and Private Hire licensing consultation on Law Commission proposals from 2014

This Consultation (reference WG31865) is to consider proposals published by the Law Commission for England and Wales in May 2014 for the reform of taxi and private hire vehicle licensing. (To date the National Government at Westminster has not published its' views of these proposals)

The commencement of certain provisions in The Wales Act 2017 has now brought the Taxi and Private Hire vehicle and driver licensing regimes within the legislative control of the National Assembly for Wales.

The consultation is seeking views on proposals that include, amongst other things:

• The introduction of national standards for all taxis and private hire vehicles;
• Introducing tougher penalties on touting, including impounding vehicles;
• Bringing  pedicabs and stretched limousines etc within licensing regulation;
• Retaining the ability of local licensing authorities to limit the number of taxis working in their area.

 

The consultation opened on the 12 June 2017;

Responses are required by the 8th September 2017.
