Taxi and Private Hire Drivers right to work may be subject to mandatory checks by LA's

At the NALEO National Licensing Seminar held today, Wednesday the 30 September 2015, Ms Rachael Gilbert of the DfT Buses and Taxis Division informed the meeting that the new Immigration Bill proposes that taxi and private hire drivers, owners and operators may be made subject to "right to work" checks under a new statutory duty to be imposed.

This Home Office proposal is that, whilst no additional burden is to be imposed on authorities, this will be a duty which councils will have to meet and so members need to be aware of this possible change. Rachael also asked whether Immigration Officers need powers to check licensed premises. Members views were mixed with some not seeing the need and some believing it would be appropriate.
